Quickly understand nylon PA6 material

Nylon PA6 (polyamide 6) is a common synthetic polymer and a member of the nylon (polyamide) family. The following is a detailed introduction to PA6:

1. Basic definition
Chemical name: Polyamide 6 (Polyamide 6), which is produced by ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam monomer.

Common names: Nylon 6, PA6.

2. Main features
Mechanical properties: High tensile strength, good toughness, excellent wear resistance, suitable for withstanding impact and friction.

Heat resistance: The melting point is approximately 220° C. It can withstand higher temperatures in the short term, but the long-term service temperature generally does not exceed 120°C.

Chemical stability: Resistant to oil and weak acids and alkalis, but may decompose in strong acids or strong alkalis.

Hygroscopicity: It readily absorbs moisture (with a moisture absorption rate of approximately 3%), which may cause dimensional changes or fluctuations in mechanical properties. Pre-drying treatment is required.

3. Application fields
Automotive industry: Manufacturing gears, bearings, radiator components, etc., to replace metals and reduce weight.

Electronic and electrical appliances: Used for insulating components such as sockets and switch casings.

Textile industry: Made into high-strength fibers for use in fishing nets, ropes, and sportswear.

Daily necessities: toothbrush bristles, packaging films, etc.

4. The difference between PA6 and PA66
Raw materials: PA6 is polymerized from caprolactam, and PA66 is condensed from adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine.

Performance:

PA66 has a higher melting point (about 260°C) and better heat resistance.

PA6 has greater toughness and better impact resistance.

The hygroscopicity of PA66 is slightly lower than that of PA6, but its cost is usually higher.

5. Production process
Polymerization process: Caprolactam undergoes ring-opening polymerization under high temperature and high pressure to form PA6 resin.

Processing methods: It can be formed through injection molding, extrusion, spinning and other processes.

6. Precautions
Moisture absorption treatment: Drying is required before processing (such as drying at 120°C for 4 hours) to prevent air bubbles or strength reduction.

Environmental impact: Non-biodegradable naturally, but recyclable. Attention should be paid to environmental protection treatment.

7. Market positioning
Cost performance: Compared with PA66, PA6 has a lower cost and is suitable for scenarios where heat resistance is not a high requirement.

Modified applications: Performance is often improved by adding glass fiber, flame retardants, etc., such as enhancing rigidity or fire resistance.
